Details:The sidewalk is covered in a sheet of ice for about 20 feet due to the way water is routed from this property to a drain. The drain is near the sidewalk so as water exits the drain it flows onto the sidewalk. This is a problem when it freezes and creates a large area of ice.

Details:Thank you for your submission. Public Works staff advises that this area has been treated.

FCO Comment:  The rain garden is intended to prevent harmful/toxic run off from entering the Chesapeake Bay.  The City's ton of salt will thus directly bypass that garden and go directly into the eco-system.  Sort of like mainlining death to the various forms of aquatic life in Tripps Run, at the base of the hill.

Date Submitted:11/25/2013 8:11:49 AM
Status:Closed (12/11/2013 10:43:28 AM)
Location (if any):Shreve and Route 7
Details:Heading East on Shreve Road. Long John Silvers is at the junction. There is a sign that says no turn on red. I often see cars turning right on red at this intersection and it seems relatively safe to do so though the sign prohibits it. The sign is visible during the day but much harder to see at night, especially if you are right at the intersection. If the sign must stay then maybe it should be also be posted on the light pole across the street so drivers would see the red stop light and see the sign prohibiting right on red.

Falls Church City Comment Box: #650. Pedestrian flips off motorist, complains to City

Date Submitted:11/11/2013 12:28:22 PM
Status:Open
Location (if any):the corner of South West Street and Ellison Street.
Details:South West Street needs traffic calming. Today I walked from my residence to the local Rite Aid, through Berman Park, onto the sidewalk at Ellison Street. I waited at the corner of Ellison and South West Street for a break in traffic. A large box truck stopped and motioned for me to cross South West Street. I proceeded cautiously in front of the box truck to make sure no one was barrelling up South West Street towards Broad Street or down South West Street from Broad Street. Sure enough a car was passing the line of cars in line behind the large box truck. Not only that, he was crossing a double yellow line. As he approached me, without pausing, he yelled out the window that I should be crossing at the crosswalk. (note: there is no crosswalk at Ellison Street and South West Street). He did not stop and did not yield right of way to a pedestrian crossing at the corner of Ellison and South West Street. (which I was raised to understand was correct pedestrian behavior). I gave him the finger. I only wish I had copied down his license plate.

Details:Although many children walk down to W Rosemary Lane from Gibson, Tracy and Robinson, to join the kids on W Rosemary as they walk to TJ, there is no safe way to cross Seaton to get to the sidewalk on the other side and continue to TJ. There is no crosswalk indicated although with the current configuration clearly everyone is expected to cross there. There is no warning for cars that there are many street crossers just over the hill. And there is no sidewalk on the eastern side of Seaton to allow the students to walk to Jackson and then cross at the Stop signs. I do not see whay a sidewalk could not be added if you do not want to put in a marked crosswalk reminding cars to be prepared to stop. Why has this intersection never been addressed. I have brought this up in years past also.

Location (if any):Intersection of N Fairfax St and N Cherry Street.
Details:When approaching N Cherry Street on N Fairfax Drive, and when coming from the Presbyterian Church to Columbia Street, it is very hard to see to the left at that corner because of the shrubs planted there. They are too tall to see over and they come right up to the curb. One must pull out onto Cherry before one can tell whether any traffic is coming from the left. Are there rules about shrubs which interfere with visibility this way? It is not safe. I also ride by on my bike frequently and am afraid because I know how hard it is for cars to see.

Location (if any):I-66 / Route 7 backing to Colonel Lindsay Ct.
Details:As a new Falls Church Resident with a property backing to I-66, do I have any options regarding noise? Road noise is tolerable, noise from the metro subway is not. I realize I-66 is a federal road, and VDOT maintains it - currently a sound wall exists on the south side but not the north side of I-66, where my property is located. I haven't received any good info from VDOT other than sound walls are only considered during construction projects, so don't ask otherwise. Also, if I was to look into a fence with noise-suppressing features - how long is the approval process for a fence that is 10-12 feet high?

Location (if any):Route 7 between I-66 and West street in Falls Church.
Details:I recently moved back to Falls Church after living here 13 years ago. I'm disappointed to see that the traffic issues on route 7 between I-66 and Washington have not been resolved. I'm not sure how people put up with a 20-30 minute travel time (during and around rush hour) through falls church on Rt. 7 just to go a bit over 3 miles! Are the lights timed and/or coordinated in any way? It seems in particular the Route 7/Shreve/Haycock light conflicts with the Route 7/Birch light. EX: When route 7 traffic headed east gets a green light, they have no where to go because traffic is still backed up from the red light at Birch. A similar situation occurs between Birch and West streets on Rt.7. Also, the reverse - Going west on Route 7, traffic severely backs up at the Shreve/Hayock light due to poor traffic signal timing. I'm not a traffic engineer, but it seems the side street lights are too long, and route 7's cycle is too short, based on the gridlock that occurs on Rt.7 between light cycles. Check out google maps traffic - it's pretty consistent on a daily basis! Any thoughts on having local PD direct that intersection during rush hour - it's worse than most intersections in DC! And based on my property taxes, Falls Church can most definitely afford it!

Falls Church City Comment Box: #640. Danger to Cyclists

Note:  This is a freely obtainable matter of public record.

Leave a comment for Falls Church City Hall here.

Date Submitted:10/21/2013 10:52:35 PM
Status:Closed (1/7/2014 3:47:06 PM)
Location (if any):Pedestrian Intersection at Falls Ave and Broad St http://goo.gl/maps/XaJiy
Details:One of the main cycling routes for students commuting to George Mason H.S. cuts through this pedestrian intersection between Sonic Soft and Capitol One Bank. Due to how the curb ramps are poorly angled, cyclists come dangerously close to hitting fast moving vehicles on Broad St, sometimes as close as 2 feet away. When you put a bus or large truck in the picture, the threat of getting run over and facing a serious injury or death can become quite real quite fast. Cyclists don't have much in the way of cars and trucks and just turn to squash when the two are put together. To make this intersection safer for cyclists or anybody requiring use of the ramps, I propose that the two curbs be widened to the whole brick length of the crossing (extended by 2 yds +/- or the width of the sidewalk), so Broad St. traffic is no longer a threat to those using the ramps. This change would make the trip to and from school for many much more secure.
